Scores of dead fish are flowing down the Msunduzi river that runs between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Over the weekend KZN social media users shared shocking footage of fish washed up on the river banks.

An oil spill originated from the Pietermaritzburg plant of the Sunfoil factory on Tuesday deposited 1.6 million litres of fatty oils and caustic soda.

Sunfoil says the ecological disaster was caused by a vegetable oil storage tank that collapsed.

This also also brought down a tank of caustic soda used to make laundry soap.

Willowton Group, the company responsible said efforts to contain the spill and prevent it from reaching the Inanda Dam are ongoing.
