SA’s Justin Sullivan wins online vote in Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest

Cape Town photographer Justin Sullivan’s surgically piercing aerial view of an African elephant poached for ivory in northern Botswana has been voted best photo of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest’s online voters’ competition. The win in this for Sullivan, having Disconnection make it into the finals of the prestigious annual contest evoked mixed feelings.

An African elephant poached in Northern Botswana, just 20 minutes away from a nearby village. Poachers used a chainsaw to cut off the trunk and tusks. Poaching in Botswana increased by an estimated 593 percent between 2014 and 2018. Justin Sullivan made a documentary to fight the scourge of poaching.
