CAPE TOWN: Residents of Marikana informal settlements in Philippi Lower, have called on Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and Western Cape Minister for Safety, Dan Plato, to intervene to restore safety in the area.

This followed a series of incidents in the area which led to mob justice, which saw four people being killed earlier in the week and four houses belonging to suspected criminals torched during a patrol by members of the community on Friday. Angered by the arrest, about 600 community members of Marikana, Philippi Lower, Thabo Mbekl, Lloyd and Plaza areas marched on the Philippi East Police station in the morning to demand the release of the community members.

According to a resident who wanted to remain anonymous said police confirmed in their meeting that they are scared to patrol in Marikana and Lower, now when they are taking actions themselves they are being arrested.  Residents were dispatch by rubber bullets. Video by: ANA
