After 29 years United Democratic Front-activist (UDF) Michael Lucas’s remains were officially returned to his family, who buried him in Oudtshoorn at the weekend.

Lucas was sentenced to death on August 21, 1987 in the Cape Town Supreme Court for the murder of a bus inspector, William Blaauw.

He was hanged at Pretoria Central Prison on March 25, 1988, and was buried the same day in a pauper’s grave in the Mamelodi Cemetery in Pretoria.

Lucas’s daughter, Pamela Tu, on Sunday said their family had finally been given the peace they were denied for many years.
